D.L. Howell & Associates, Inc. was approached by the Pro Cycling Tour team and asked to create a tour route map for the 28th Edition of the USA's Top Ranked International Cycling Classic, held in Philadelphia on June 3, 2012. The map was created to aid the Pro Cycling Tour planners in the layout of the potential areas of the course that would require safety barriers, blockades, safety netting and signage.

The 14 mile race course was broken down into a series of specific safety zones. There was a certain level of detail required, so each zone was covered in its own map.

A working knowledge of the race course was important to develop the race maps. We took some time to drive the race course, photographing areas of interest along with areas that would require additional safety elements along the way. iPhone GPS applications were also used so that a rough outline of the race course could later be exported into Google Earth. After returning with the photographs of the course and GPS data, the information was brought into Google Earth. A KML file (Google Earth Path file) was then created and shared amongst the planners.

With the race course data collected, the maps could now be created. The maps created included a
high resolution zone map and a high resolution race course map detailing the zone locations. Samples
of the race map and a sample of one of the zone maps is shown in the image below.
