D L Howell & Associates was contracted by the Upper Main Line YMCA (UMLY) to help solve one of their biggest complaints from members and staff…lack of parking. Only seven years after the UMLY campus was renovated, which included a much larger parking lot and several building additions, the ever growing membership of the UMLY has forced the main parking area to be expanded once again.
Our office was contacted by Bud Herman, the UMLY Operational Services Director, and was asked to provide several options where their existing facility could be expanded to provide more parking as close to the main entrance as possible. After a few different iterations were presented to the UMLY Board, it was determined that most beneficial solution would be to relocate the existing bus parking area and provide an additional 54 parking spaces along the northern edge of the existing parking lot.
As typical with most land development projects these days, the additional impervious improvements prompted D.L. Howell to design an underground storm water management and infiltration system in order to comply with state and local regulations. D.L. Howell conducted infiltration tests along the side of the parking area and designed an underground pipe storage system in a confined area in order to reduce construction costs. In addition to stormwater control, lighting, landscaping, and erosion control were also provided to enhance the new parking area and also ensure construction activities would not interrupt the numerous activities held at the Y on a daily basis.
While the land development plans for the parking expansion were being processed with the Township, D.L. Howell was now busy preparing permit plans for a very important playground renovation for the Y. The existing playground area for the complex was outdated and more importantly was not accessible to all children that either belong to the Y or attend camps there during the summer. With the help of Liberty Parks & Playgrounds, Inc, construction of the newly renovated All Abilities Playground is scheduled to be completed in October. With ADA accessible walkways and an all weather poured in place rubber play surface, the new playground will be a welcomed addition to the incredible facilities already offered at the Upper Main Line YMCA branch. DL Howell is thankful to have gotten the opportunity to work with the amazing UMLY Staff and to help improve the facilities that are such a large part of the local community.
